Movie tough guy RAY LIOTTA has confessed to having a soft spot for AMERICAN IDOL.
The Goodfellas star, who has made a name for himself playing hitmen, hard men and heavies on the big screen, admits he’s a big fan of the TV talent show and the performances of wannabes often move him.
He says, “Sometimes I watch and when the right guy or the right girl sings and you can see them, like, coming up to their moment… I find that really inspirational.”
And he tells TV news show Extra, “Sometimes I’m moved by it… I don’t want to run out and sing a song, but I just think when people are reaching their dreams, it’s a little inspirational.”

These characters are going to be part of a large ensemble that Fey and Carell meet up with on a date.

Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Taraji P. Henson, Common, Leighton Meester, Kristen Wiig and Jimmi Simpson are also going to be in this film directed by Shawn Levy (night at the museum, pink panther).

Liotta will play the role of Joe Miletto, a villain. Kunis will play the wife of Franco’s character. Ruffalo will be Wiig’s husband and Carell’s best friend.

Date Night started shooting last month. It was written by Josh Klausner.

While this seems like a good enough idea for a movie, and it certainly has a talented ensemble cast, the director’s past efforts have all been mediocre to say the least. It is interesting to see Ray teaming up with Steve Carell and Tina Fey following his role in Observe and Report with Seth Rogen – 3 of today’s top comedic actors. Ray’s comedic skills have not been fully utilized. For anyone who has seen Heartbreakers, you know how brilliant Ray is as a comedic actor. I hope that he starts getting more prominent roles in comedy movies. I think he would fit right in with the Apatow crowd as well as the Sandler crowd. Ray’s cult status is rising and he is comedy gold just waiting to be discovered. (see previous post regarding best ray scene ever)

Is there a better Ray Liotta scene?

If there is I sure haven’t found it… Some people might say the bitch slap scene from Goodfellas, others might say the tender first kiss between Ray and Whoopie in Corrina, Corrina.   But what about the climax of No Escape, or when Ray dove out of the helicopter to free fall to save the elephant in mid air in Dumbo Drop.?  Ultimately there are way too many to mention.  The man is perhaps the greatest film, television and stage actor of our time.  I think this scene captures all that we love about Ray.

We see an incredible emotional range in just a few seconds.  Ray in his bikini undies, completely hairless, pointing a revolver and crying.  He shows intense anger and hatred with subtle undercurrents of despair, fear and hopelessness that emerge slowly as the scene is played out.  Ray cries brilliantly – (see flash back scenes in No Escape) – but in this scene he takes it to a new level.  Ray is brimming with so much emotion and grief that he his tears and spit begin to shoot out of body with such lyricism and drama that you will find yourself crying along in empathetic solidarity with Ray even though we have been trained to hate his character throughout the coarse of the movie.
